A violent mob on Friday attacked Ramjanj police station and set vehicles on fire after an altercation between the police and local residents.
One person has been killed in the incident and eight policemen are injured. Out of these, four policemen are seriously injured, informed a highly placed police official.
Three vehicles including a 108 ambulance and an electricity transformer were also set on fire by the irate mob. Several other vehicles were also damaged.
As a preventive measure police had to resort to firing in the air and used tear gas to disperse the mob.
The tension erupted when a youth was allegedly detained from the Ramganj area by the police. His family reached the police station and the fight escalated. It is alleged that the police hit one of the family members, a woman with a lathi. The family then called local residents who collected in large numbers, pelted stones at the police station and set vehicles on fire.
There was an ongoing law and order situation and a mob attacked the Ramganj police station.
Senior officials including Jaipur commissioner Sanjay Agarwal rushed to the spot to contain the situation.
“Police is investigating the matter and strict action will be taken against the guilty,” said Siddharth Mahajan, Jaipur, collector.
RAC battalions and forces from the police lines were called in to control the situation. The police urged the people to stay indoors and sought cooperation from local peace committees to contain the situation.
