So, you are just walking around the neighborhood when an unleashed dog comes out of nowhere and bites you. What steps do you take after such an unfortunate incident? What most people do not understand is that the dog’s owner is liable for any damages done to the people around provided; it was not a case of property intrusion. You, therefore, have the right to sue the owner and get compensation for the injuries caused by the dog attack. The main issue is on the things you should do after the attack, and in this article, you will get a comprehensive guide on the same.

Identify the dog’s owner

The first thing to do before you can even think of filing a claim is to identify the dog’s owner. This way, you will know who you are about to deal with, and you can collect all the information needed. Sometimes, the liable party may be willing to settle the issue without going to court, and it is wise that you give them that chance. You should also get the address of the owner and let them show you a proof of rabies vaccination. Rabies is the most dangerous part of a dog bite, and in case of absence of vaccination proof, you will have to undergo several injections for the same.

Seek medical help

Your health should always come first. It is wise that you undergo immediate medical care to determine if you are under any health threats. Do not assume that just because the attack was not severe or the bite was not deep, then you are safe. It is not in your place to make such decisions. Let the doctor examine you and give you the necessary medications.

File a report

After getting medical attention, you should file a dog attack report to the respective authorities. This is to document your case and show that you were indeed attacked as a result of the dog owner’s negligence. If a particular dog has more than one attack case, the authorities will take the necessary precautions. When filing a report, you should have clear photos of the scene and attacks. In case of any marks left, ensure that they are well captured. You will need this as proof.

Get a lawyer

This is a personal injury case, and issues surrounding this law are always complicated. They require an expert to navigate through them and ensure that you get the justice you deserve. For starters, you need to prove that you were not at fault for whatever happened. This is the only way you can get compensation. Luckily, the attorney understands personal injury law better than you do. S/he can quickly gather evidence and show that you deserve compensation.

What’s more? With a reputable New Jersey personal injury lawyer, you are assured of getting high-value compensation. The lawyer knows how to deal with the insurance provider until you get the monetary benefit that you deserve. With a lawyer, you can focus on recovering and leave the experts to do what they do best.

These are the four major steps to follow after an attack by your neighbor’s dog rest assured you will get justice. Although things can never be the same again, getting compensation and seeing the liable party being held accountable will make the situation better.
