Over 300 detained as preventive arrests in Mumbai

MUMBAI: Following the rejection of mercy plea of Yaqub Memon by the Supreme Court, the city police began preventive arrest and detained over 300 people till Thursday morning. They included anti social elements and history sheeters.

The purpose of these detention was to maintain the law and order in Mumbai. “Since the order of Supreme Court against Memon’s mercy plea, we have begun rounding up suspects who could disturb law and order. As per our lists we have rounded up more than 300 people,” said a a senior police officer.

Police in the city said that Memon’s family was likely to reach to the city with his family till 1pm. Memon was hanged to death in Nagpur prison early in the morning. His body will be brought to his Mahim residence and will later be taken to Muslim cemetery in Marine Lines. “We are also keeping watch on the activities of the serial bomb blast convicts who were released from the jail after serving their term and staying in the city,” said another officer.

Cops are expecting over a thousand people to gather to se Memon’s body before the final rites.
