CBI registers FIR in Sheena Bora murder case; probe handed over to two women IPS officers

NEW DELHI: The CBI has registered a case in the sensational Sheena Bora murder case charging her mother Indrani Mukerjea, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamwar Pinturam Rai with abduction, murder, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence among others.

The agency has also added Section 328 of IPC pertaining to giving poison to Sheena, which was not included by the Mumbai police in its FIR.

Interestingly, the probe, where the CBI will have to deal with several unanswered questions to find out the motive, has been handed over to two women IPS officers. Sources said DIG of special crimes unit 1, Lata Manoj Kumar, a 2000 batch Rajasthan cadre IPS officer, will investigate the case while joint director of special crimes unit Nina Singh, a 1989 batch Rajasthan cadre IPS officer, will be in the overall supervisory role.

The CBI’s Delhi-based special crimes unit has handled some heinous crime cases in the last few decades. Earlier, Mumbai police ex-commissioner Rakesh Maria himself handled the probe in the case.

Sources said DIG Kumar had already reached Mumbai with a team of investigators and forensic experts from CFSL to begin the probe. The CBI team is likely to first visit Raigad where Sheena’s body was allegedly disposed of by the accused after she was killed on April 24, 2012.

The agency will look into all aspects of the case like financial issues, Indrani’s insecurities about her lies and a sudden provocation among others to take the case to any conclusion
